US President Donald Trump has endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the second time. He did so in a Truth Social post published on Sunday evening, only days before Israel's upcoming election.
In the message, Trump asked Israeli voters to keep the prime minister's record in mind when they cast their ballots. "When you go to the Polls please remember that Bibi has been an outstanding Warrior Prime Minister!" he wrote.
Trump described a strong working relationship with Netanyahu and said the two had been "winning together." He pointed to Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Epic Fury as examples. He ended with a direct appeal: "Vote for Bibi Netanyahu for Prime Minister; we have to finish the job that we started!"
The post followed a report by The Jerusalem Post earlier on Sunday that Netanyahu had stepped up his efforts to win additional backing from the American president. Two American sources told the newspaper that Netanyahu and his supporters within Trump's inner circle were increasing pressure on Trump to issue new statements of support. "We have never seen Netanyahu like this before. He is showing signs of political desperation," the sources said.
An earlier report from Axios added further detail about the contacts between the two leaders. According to that account, Netanyahu and Trump have spoken twice over the past three days, and Netanyahu went so far as to suggest possible wording for new endorsements. An Israeli source briefed on the efforts told Axios that the prime minister also proposed that Trump speak with Israeli journalists to repeat his support.
Trump's message also carried a warning about what a different election result could mean for relations between the two countries. "If Israel has the wrong leader, meaning anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this job itself, and I'm not inclined to do that," he wrote. The Jerusalem Post said the remark referred to the confrontation with Iran.
Taken together, the post mixes praise for Netanyahu's leadership, a direct call to vote for him and a statement about the possible consequences of choosing another candidate. It arrives at a moment when, according to the reports, the prime minister has been actively seeking exactly this kind of public backing from Washington as voters prepare to go to the polls.
