A civilian pilot was forced to exit a restricted flight zone near Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday after a military F-16 closed in on the aircraft. The maneuver occurred around 12:20 p.m. ET while President Donald Trump was at a polling station in West Palm Beach to vote in the midterm election. The incident highlights the routine but tense intersection of presidential travel and civilian air traffic.

U.S. military officials stated that a North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) fighter jet approached the civilian plane head-on to gain the pilot's attention. This specific tactic, referred to by NORAD as the 'headbutt maneuver,' is described by the command as a standard procedure for establishing contact. The close pass allowed the military jet to link up with the civilian pilot, who then steered the aircraft out of the restricted area in compliance with flight instructions.

The civilian jet had entered a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zone. NORAD noted that while the pilot followed instructions after the interception, the initial violation meant the pilot could face federal authorities upon landing. Enforcement actions remain possible for aircraft that breach these temporary zones. The FAA issues such restrictions frequently for events involving high-profile figures, including sporting events, rallies, and presidential appearances.

Pilot awareness of these zones relies on Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), which the FAA transmits to aircraft. Pilots are encouraged to monitor these notices regularly to avoid conflicts with restricted airspace. The TFR over Mar-a-Lago was in place due to the president's presence in the area for his early ballot.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were seen at a West Palm Beach polling station on Saturday afternoon. The president cast his early vote ahead of next week's general elections. When asked if he voted along party lines, Trump replied, 'Very much so.' He subsequently traveled to Georgia for a campaign rally.

This is the third recent interception involving presidential campaign stops. Earlier in October, NORAD reported F-16s intercepting a plane in restricted airspace over Clemson, South Carolina, where Trump supported Senator Darline Graham. A similar event occurred days prior over Cincinnati, Ohio. These recurring incidents underscore the increased frequency of air traffic checks around the president's campaign schedule.
