Mike Boynton is now the full-time head basketball coach at the University of Michigan.

The Wolverines signed Boynton to a two-year contract this week. He had served as interim head coach immediately after Dusty May departed for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks following Michigan's national championship season. Boynton previously spent two years as an assistant on May's staff. He had a 119-109 record over seven seasons as head coach at Oklahoma State. He was let go after that program finished 12-20 in 2023-24. Boynton told reporters at Big Ten media days that the past two years felt like a sabbatical. He described sitting next to May as a daily lesson in managing a high-functioning corporation. He noted that he learned how to identify specific qualities in people and delegate responsibilities effectively.

Michigan's coaching change is the most prominent part of a large offseason shuffle in college basketball. Several other programs also changed leadership. Kansas State fired Jerome Tang after three seasons of poor results. Tang compiled a 45-47 record during that stretch. He had reached a regional final in his first year with a 26-10 record. Casey Alexander now leads Kansas State. He holds a 303-180 career record from stops at Stetson, Lipscomb, and Belmont. Will Wade returned to LSU for a second stint. He was fired there in 2022 after the NCAA cited him for recruiting violations. Matt McMahon replaced Wade but was dismissed after going 60-70 in four years. Wade went 105-51 during his first tenure at LSU. He also led McNeese and N.C. State to NCAA Tournament berths in his time away. N.C. State hired Justin Gainey as a first-time head coach. Gainey was a former Wolfpack captain and recently worked on Rick Barnes' staff at Tennessee.

North Carolina made an unusual choice by hiring Michael Malone. Malone had no prior ties to the program and no college head coaching experience. He went 510-394 as an NBA coach from 2013 to 2025. He won a championship with the Denver Nuggets in 2023. Malone replaces Hubert Davis, who posted a 125-54 record in five years. Davis led the Tar Heels to the NCAA championship game in 2022. Syracuse hired Gerry McNamara, who holds the school records for three-point baskets and minutes played. McNamara led Siena to a 23-12 record and an NCAA Tournament bid last season. He replaces Adrian Autry, who was fired after going 49-48 without a tournament berth in three years.

Changes occurred on the women's side as well. Pauline Love returns to Alabama as head coach. She worked there as an assistant in 2024-25. She also spent last season as an assistant at Oklahoma. Kristy Curry left Alabama for South Florida after 13 seasons. Tammi Reiss joins the staff after going 138-73 in seven years at Rhode Island. She replaces Kelly Rae Finley, who was fired after five seasons. Ayla Guzzardo takes over at Georgia after leading McNeese to a school-record 29 wins last season. Katie Abrahamson-Henderson departed Georgia following a mutual parting of ways. She went 69-59 in four seasons. Carla Berube arrives at Northwestern after going 147-29 in six years at Princeton. She reached the NCAA Tournament in each of her last five seasons. Joe McKeown retired after 18 seasons at Northwestern. Aaron Rousell moves to Virginia after seven seasons at Richmond. He was 148-72 and earned three straight NCAA berths. He replaces Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, who was fired in April. Cooley takes over at Georgetown after three seasons there. She previously posted a 242-153 record in 12 seasons at Providence. South Carolina's coaching situation saw Paris leave after a combined 25-39 record over the last two seasons. Tennessee overhauled its roster after ending Caldwell's second season with eight straight losses. Texas A&M has earned an NCAA bid in only one of Taylor's four years. The Aggies went 24-32 combined over the last two seasons.
